Locke and Publius Comparing Their Views on Civil Government

Throughout history there have been significant debates, theories and agendas set forward as to what the best form of government is. Many of those individuals and groups who have written on the topic have their critics because they offer points that are highly controversial in theory and problematic when put into practice. John Locke and Publius, which is the collective name for Alexander Hamilton, James Madison and John Jay, both published essays with regards to the nature of government and largely championed the notion of democracy. With Locke writing on constitutional government in England and Publius writing on and essentially establishing governmental mechanisms in the United States, both parties inspired the rise of liberalism and†¦show more content†¦However, he repeatedly refers to humans as â€Å"rational creatures† (Locke, 57), thus implying that they have the ability to think logically and make sensible and reasonable decisions despite the fact that individu als may be prone to ignorance or be biased by their own interests (Locke, 57). Publius, on the other hand, considered government to be indicative of human nature in that it was necessary because men were â€Å"no angels† and were malleable to the wishes of others (Publius, 337). This contrasts with the assertions of Locke as it does not imply that man is selfish but does acknowledge their ability for wrongdoing in the absence of governance. In fact, the implication is that human nature is somewhat prone to acts of violence as a result of passion and conviction (Publius, 16), which is detrimental to the interests of the whole. As far as rationality goes, their argument is closer to that of Locke in that they believe a human is capable of rational judgement but, again, often allows emotion and self interest to get in the way (Publius, 205). In this respect they agree that human nature cannot be trusted and so champion strong government that excludes self interest and arbitrary decisions based on emotion. Such discrimination and prejudice exists in society to a huge degree. I personally believe that the only difference between today and history is that people who feel such racial hate towards this population tend to hide their feelings in fear of law suits. They saw education as a plat form for success and a way in which the Hispanic population can have a grasp on the leadership of the nation in future times to come. In their strive for employment equality, â€Å"In 1933 the Latino unions in California lead the El Monte Strike, the largest agricultural strike at that point in history, to protest the declining wage rate for strawberry pickers. After The Bomb Essay After the Bomb Book SummaryAfter the Bomb written by Gloria Miklowitz is a thrilling novel that takes place before, during, and after a bomb whichsupposedly was sent from Russia by accident. L.A. and surrounding cities are all altered by the disastrous happening. Philip Singer a teenager is in a position as leader of the family. His brother Matt is awfully sick, possibly from radiation, his father was away at work during the blast and for all Philip knows he might be dead, and his mother was desperately injured and needs immediate attention. Hospitals are flooded with injured and dying people and the government doesnt send help for a few days. The badly injured dont even get the chance to be helped because the hospitals have to send the ones that are likely going to live to hospitals that specialize in burns. His mother is so badly burned that the hospitals put her on the bottom of the list to be flown to burn centers. By the end of the novel Philip has taken charge, snuck his mom a head to be flown to a burn center, and in a sense saved his town from thirst. He truly survived the terror, shock, and danger of the bomb. The novel goes through a couple of settings such as, Philips struggle to keep his family alive, and the conflict between the nature of a nuclear bomb against the Los Angeles area. When the bomb hits he is playing around in a playroom shelter with his brother and his girlfriend. They go out to find out what had happened and found burning houses, their house only left with one wall, rubble on the ground, debris all over the place, and people running frantically for shelter. Philips brother became sick after finding his mother and bringing her back down to the shelter, and found that his mother had been burnt severely and needed immediate medical attention. Philip struggles to keep his brother from getting even more sick than he was and to bring his mother to a hospital. Philips family werent the only people affected by the bomb. the entire surround ing area of Los Angeles was pounded by a devastating bomb. Churches, Hospitals, and streets were flooded with sick, dying, and even dead people. Hospitals that were built to only withstand 200 people now have thousands, and hospitals lack food, doctors, and water. Philips struggle for survival, and the devastating blow against L.A. was only the beginning of the disastrous bomb. The setting is practically the whole plot of the novel showing Philips struggle to get his mother to a burn center that could saveher life, bring his family to safety, and to save his town from thirst. When Philip arrives at the hospital with his mom the government and hospital had already started flying patients to burn centers, but his mom was too sick and burnt so the hospital didnt care for her. She was placed on the bottom of list to be flown away. Philip secretly switches the tag on her mom with one that says and earlier number so that she would be flown out more promptly. He does so and she is flown out early and he most probably saved her life by doing so. Another example was when the bomb had just struck and Philips family was in the shelter w hich wasnt very safe and stable. He went up to the surface to check out his neighbors house which was miraculously intact. Philip found the owner and his wife in good shape and arranged to bring his family over to the neighbors cool basement for safety and refuge. A third example was when the hospital in his town was almost pout of water and Philip was asked by a nurseto find a worker that works with the town s plumbing at his house and manage to get water to the hospital. He did so and after a while drained water from a residents pool and had it flown down to the hospital. These are some examples of how the setting functions in the novel. The Graduated Driver License The Graduated Driver License (GDL) is a law that is aimed to reduce teen driving deaths. This law goes into affect July 1, 2001. The new driving law is made up of 3 main restrictions. These parts are: 1. For the first six months after issuance of an Intermediate Driver's License, the holder of the license may not have any passengers in the car under the age of 20, except for members of the holder's immediate family. 2. After the first six months, the holder may not have more than three passengers in the car under the age of 20, except for members of the holder's immediate family. 3. The holder of an Intermediate Driver's License may not operate a vehicle between the hours of 1 a.m. and 5 a.m. except when the holder is accompanied by a parent, guardian, or a licensed driver who is at least twenty-five years of age. These restrictions remain on a driver with the Intermediate Driver's License until they are 18 or if after the first 12 months the holder has not been involved in an automobile accident and has not committed or been convicted of traffic offenses or violations of the license restrictions. The Graduated Driver License law is an infringement on civil rights. Our country has a history of refusing the rights of its people. African Americans were not allowed to sit in the front of a public bus, they were not allowed to use restrooms that were reserved for the White population, and they were not allowed to vote. All of these "laws" and policies were placed on them because it was believed that African Americans were a lesser people, they were considered inferior to the Caucasian race. Our history also teaches that women were once considered to be less then men. They could not own land; if they had inherited land and married, their husband was immediately given ownership of their lands. All the children a woman gave birth to were considered the property of their husbands. It was unacceptable for a woman to work once she married and the jobs they were allowed to take were limited to teaching or house keeping of some kind, such as being a maid. What was the reasoning behind these limitations being placed on women? The majority of men believed that woman were not capable of handling the responsibilities that men held, they did not think woman had enough intelligence to make wise choice so they were not allowed to vote. There have been many books written about African American suffrage and woman's suffrage. This law expresses the same ideas shown to woman and African Americans in the past. Once again the majority has decided that just because a person is under the age of 18 they are not intelligent enough or responsible enough to handle driving a car which millions of Americans have the right to do every day. As with any gender, race, and ethnicity there are always a few who do not follow laws or act in a responsible manor, however, that is no excuse to refuse rights to any group regardless of age. Refusing our rights is not the way to save lives. They should make and enforce tougher punishments for those that violate the laws that govern drivers of all ages. If this law is passed I predict there will be a new suffrage movement. Teens can band together to fight the hypocrisy, which is our political right set forth by our forefathers. I am aware that we are not allowed to vote until the age of 18 but we can still make it clear to our legislature that although we are young, we will vote in three short years and we will not forget those who voted for the law that will take away our freedom.
